Urge the city to invest public dollars in transit, not parking garages!

On Monday, July 13th, the Finance Committee of City Council will be voting whether to approve a TIF to subsidize a parking garage for the new soccer stadium being built at The 78. This is after abandoning previously-approved plans to invest public dollars in transit in the original 2019 proposal.

There has been very little communication about what public benefit will be provided by this $216 MILLION taxpayer investment, and little opportunity for public input on how our money will be spent. Take a moment and urge your Alderperson to slow things down, delay the vote, and urge transparency and investment in transit!

Dear [you alderperson],

I am asking you to delay any votes on TIF spending for The 78 until more communication, transparency, and public input opportunities are provided on how taxpayer money is being spent.

In 2019, the City approved plans to invest in public transit, cycling, riverfront and park improvements to the site – providing a true public benefit for public dollars. Unfortunately, in a rushed move to build a billionaire's soccer stadium, they have now scrapped many of those public investments to build a parking garage instead. This means 22,000 game goers, future residents, and other visitors of the site will be left with few options other than driving to the site. Additionally, the public is left with significant concerns about the return of investment in a publicly-owned parking garage, with scant information on expected revenues and how they would be spent.

Instead of ramming this TIF amendment through, I am asking you to slow things down, ask tough questions, and ensure that public dollars are being spent wisely and with true public benefit.
